Mostly because crypto bros and AI evangelists sorta ate up all the components on one hand, and Google and IBM's fetish for poor memory utilization and optimization kinda made desktop components pricier

What I did for my lab was buy one REALLY good desktop that can bootstrap a large dataset across 10,000 samples in like 30 seconds...and then really cheap, easily replaceable workstations for routine use (read: not doing that)
