Mao tried to do communism. It wasn't working great, and Deng reformed it into state capitalism, after which China experienced massive growth and reduction of poverty. This isn't controversial.
You have a point but this is a bit silly. There were giant socialist projects in the 20th century. At one point most of the world pop lived in countries trying to do socialism. They failed. USSR & China were the big ones. China *became* only nominally socialist bc their communism wasn't working.
