For a field like 'critical data studies' where I roam a bit, many use 'political/politics' as some sort of synonym for 'not neutral' primarily as a means to remind their super technical colleagues that there's more to the world than the optimization of the world through technology (1)
Its philosophically speaking not very helpful and clear, but the usage of the adjective might also serve a different purpose, and has maybe more to do with the act of communicating across disciplinary boundaries which will almost always involve the usage of ambiguous and fuzzy concepts (2)
