I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be misleading! Thank you for your concern 🩵

Thank you! But I didn't lose a child, thank goodness, it's a research question from a patron at the hospital library where I work.

Let's plasticize our loved one so they look uncanny and unfamiliar and then stand around for hours in uncomfortable shoes! That's what grief needs!

And "grim" is distinct from "somber" or "solomn," both of which I think are totally appropriate vibes. We get that at the funeral. The wake is extra.

If I squint I can kind of see how viewing the body might provide closure of a sort but there's no food or drink or readings or even music. It's just grim.

Also at my grandpa's wake one of his VA buddies went up to my husband and said "I don't have any chop suey on me" so I'm definitely never asking him to come to one again

When someone in my family dies we have a "wake" by which we mean awkward socializing in a room with a dead person. Why do we do this. It's impossible for me to imagine anyone deriving solace from it.

Yeah that sounds exhausting. When, hopefully a long time from now, my mom needs regular help, I would like to be able to provide that help and also sleep in my own bed.
