If you haven't read Lois McMaster Bujold both her Chalion and Vorkosigan series are well read and peerless genre fiction. Lonesome Dove is great but it's a lot of hours so good for when you're low on credits. Naomi Norvik's fairytale stories are great and you might enjoy Doorways Of Eden by Adrian T

If you're trying Vorkosigan start with The Warrior's Apprentice (the first in publishing order) which is truly irresistible. There are a couple of later books set earlier which are good but work much better in the context of knowing where they're going IMO.
