They think the ball would be easier to see if they were actually playing. It's not, and even if it were they wouldn't be able to react to it.

Or marksmanship. People saw the memes of the Turkish guy and think anyone off the street could do it.

I recall Bill Bryson writing about watching table tennis at the Sydney Games, the only sport he’d actually played out of all those he’d seen there, & being stunned to realize they were playing at a level he could never reach & therefore everyone else he’d seen was too.
