Is it naive to think we could make something of our own? Or are those resources so firmly attached to outside interests as to make any AAA studio subject to their toxic whims?

Technically nothing stops you from developing a game that aims to be better than Destiny 2 (meaning supporting many thousands of players at the same time, with compelling gameplay systems and frequent updates). It's an extremely complicated and risky business, especially at the current time.
