all things considered, i don’t think it’s obviously true that a short lived fad where you got dressed up sharply and went out to dance with your partner and friends was worse than one where you each spend your friday nights sitting next to each other looking at your phones, tbh
Went out to coffee w/my family on Saturday & my Dad was people watching. He mentioned how strange it was that kids on dates were on their phones. I’m glad this didn’t become a thing until a few years into dating my now husband.
My wife and I will still bust out our (rusty) swing moves when the music and mood are right. Other than the name of that one band, all things considered it was a Good Fad.
that was maybe my peak era. I was not a good dancer but it was stylish and fun, and we were out every damn night. It required a little effort. We took CLASSES. people wore HATS. it was so easy to meet people, both romantically & platonically all of it unimaginable in this day and age
I was never into the music but my wife and I do east coast swing and yeah, it’s fun to get dressed up and twirl her around to a live band.
Looking at phones with a spouse in silence is just bleak as f#ck.

I started dancing lessons with a bunch of high school friends, kept up through college & grad school. Just last month celebrated the 50th anniversary of the MIT Ballroom Dance club. Retired but still go to Georgia Tech's Ballroom Dance club social dances.
