Lotta people need to get better at distinguishing between the ideas “anti-Zionism is not antisemitism” and “anti-Zionists can’t be antisemitic”
Fascists just hop on whatever bandwagon they think might win them legitimacy
I feel like part of the problem is that so much of the mainstream media and political system conflates anti-zionism and antisemitism that it pushes people to look for other sources, which the right wing is *very* adept at co-opting. This isn't to excuse antisemitism, but to say it's a pipeline.
I've seen pivots in some people I know that seem like their process was "well saying 'Jews' is clearly bad and 'the current Israeli nationalist government/ideology' is too wordy, let's google this 'Zionist' word people are using and take what the internet turns up at face value."
Being anti-Zionist actually means you gotta be extra careful not to step into the antisemitism sinkholes hidden about.
If it weren't for rigid binary thinking, there would be a whole lot less thinking.
Over here neo-Nazis loved hiding behind the "free Palestine" slogan. They were also doing the "if Israel is allowed to do X, our gov should do it, too" rhetoric bc in their narrative "Jews = libs", so the atrocities of Israel are actually by "the libs", so if "libs" are allowed, why aren't they?
Agreed. But let's add a further level of nuance: you don't have to be anti-Zionist to think that what's happening in Gaza is genocide.
