The language around childless people of “skin in the game” or ”a stake in the future” is so revealing because it just takes for granted no one cares about anything that doesn’t affect them personally. I want my friends’ kids to have a future too.
i just hope people take this opportunity to realize that this attitude is pretty prevalent it’s just most people don’t say it out loud
also like, climate change? the biggest thing for future generations, and cons don't give a single shit
You frame that a bit more positively than I managed to, but 100% agree. bsky.app/profile/copy...
I want everyone to have a future except people who want to exclude strangers’ children from it
It would be cool if my nieces and nephews don’t wind up drowning in boiling seawater.
Also, a venn diagram of people who say this kinda thing and who roll their eyes at the mere mention of climate change is a circle.
Theirs is basically the Ideology of banal Egoïsm
“There’s no such thing as other people’s children,” as Glennon Doyle says. (IE the responsibility for protecting and raising children belongs to everyone.)
And also, having a child can make you want to protect that child AT THE EXPENSE of all other social concerns...
Exactly! I have nieces and nephews, I have friends with kids, I want the kids growing up in my town and state to have a great education and a better shot at success than I did
