Machine learning is legitimately fascinating and important! There are some cutting edge breakthroughs on specific data sets that could provide real answers…but it’s not as sexy as “PhD level intelligent autocorrect” I guess, to the money people

I really appreciate your drawing a distinction between “machine learning” and “AI” — that’s a core critical difference that has gotten completely overlooked, and one of my concerns is that the AI bubble popping will take a lot of machine learning work down with it.

THIS! YES! PLEASE! THIS! Overpowered autocomplete has some good uses (my industry has some!), but I am convinced it's not the rabbit hole for general AI that the entire fucking industry has convinced itself that it is.
