When people frame voting as a personal choice, a consumer action, they expect that they are getting a service or product that meets all of their needs. If a candidate isn’t holistic when they’re asking for your vote, then you shouldn’t “buy in” to what they’re selling. That’s not how it works!
This is SO insightful…One could always see a clear relationship between consumer thinking and the way people talk about voting but I could not spell it out like this. A wrinkle is a feeling of participation in something horrific or even evil—esp. when we cannot stop it. This is challenging for many.
So Chappell Roan is operating within this flawed framework by using the language of personal choice in her non-endorsement. But because we are all swimming in it, especially the yutes, her perpetuation gives a very important demographic an excuse not to engage when we need their consent to govern.
