This bronze head has traditionally been associated with M Agrippa, but this is now thought questionable. Originally, the sockets would have had eyeballs (perhaps like the Meroe Augustus), but their absences lends a compelling sense sinister foreboding to the piece. 🏛️📷NY Met 🏺 AncientBlueSky

I love this mosaic. The Romans loved their seafood and I can just picture this being in a dining room in a fancy villa around the Bay of Naples so the owner could point to what his guests were scoffing at the time. Magnificent. 🏛️Naples Archaeological Museum 📷Carole Raddato 🏺 AncientBlueSky

🦔 Ancient Cycladic hedgehog! This little guy is from Chalandriani, Syros, Greece. He dates to the Early Cycladic II period (2800-2300 BCE). National Archaeological Museum, Athens, Greece. 📷 My own.

This is Great Torc found in the Snettisham horde. It is made of 64 strands of gold each about 2mm thick. Eight of these are then twisted together to create one of the eight distinctive ropes that form the torc. It is ancient British and dates from 150-50 BCE. It’s extraordinary 🏛️📷BM 🏺 AncientBlueSky

Last time I posted Etruscan stuff, I lost a follower (presumably a member of the metropolitan Roman elite who cares naught for provinces), but I’ll risk the wrath of Etruscophobes to post this marvellous polychrome sarcophagus of Seianti Hanunia Tlesnasa who died c140BCE. 🏛️BM 📷me 🏺 AncientBlueSky
