Yesterday, Defra appointed economist Dan Corry to carry out an internal review of its regulation and regulators. Senior fellow Ruth Chambers says:

"Environmental regulation is a public good as it protects fragile habitats, stops polluters from damaging our natural environment, and ensures people have rights to explore wild spaces. Any review of Defraā€™s regulatory frameworks must recognise this. But itā€™s clear that Defraā€™s regulators need more resources and a confidence boost, after years of neglect and underfunding." - Ruth Chambers, senior fellow, Green Alliance

In an otherwise confusing conference season, the cross party environmental mission was clear

With party conference season over for another year, Iā€™ve had a few days to reflect on one of the most bizarre set of conferences Iā€™ve been to. If I described the atmosphere at each, Iā€™m not convincā€¦

"Carbon capture and storage will be a vital toolā€¦ but it must not be a free pass for the oil and gas sector to continue with business-as-usual". Heather Plumpton, senior policy analyst, on the government's CCUS announcement today.

"Carbon capture and storage will be a vital tool in areas such as cement and lime-production, which are hard to decarbonise, but crucially, it must not be a free pass for the oil and gas sector to continue with business-as-usual.

As the Government sets its budget and adopts a wider fiscal framework later this month, we hope to see a fuller set of measures that will ensure a fair transition for workers across a wider range of high-carbon industries." - Heather Plumpton, senior policy analyst, Green Alliance
