"I have absolutely no doubt that we will realise the vision of a unified nation where we’re living harmoniously, because we’ve already shown that kāwanatanga and rangatiratanga can coexist. It will happen. It’s just a matter of time." - Helmut Modlik, Ngāti Toa. @etangata.bsky.social

Trump’s closing message is a full blown hate campaign against black and brown people. Historians will look back in astonishment that this terrifying reality wasn’t the subject of wall to wall coverage and commentary in weeks leading up to this election. He’s not hiding anything.

There will be staff with no accrued leave (especially as this is really short notice) who are forced to take leave w/out pay, so no income coming in to pay for necessities, let alone family celebrations. This is the most horrible thing, completely aside from the need for healthcare. Worst govt ever.

Today in 1987 the AIDS Memorial Quilt was first displayed, during the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights on the National Mall. A few years later, I was one of my high school's Art Major students there to make a VHS video about it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAMES_P...

#NZpol , this is one of the best explanations of the issues going on in our health system right now. What happened? We properly staffed medical care, and it turns out we didn't budget for that. 6 months of obsfucation come down to this. And we could fix it with additional cash, i.e. taxes.

Read this intelligent, illuminating interview with veteran Florida meteorologist John Morales (of the emotional video clip), talking with @bulletinatomic.bsky.socialthebulletin.org/2024/10/mete...

So first: geography and bathymetry, which is the shape of the bottom of the ocean. Florida is on a continental shelf. So off the Gulf Coast of Florida, the waters are shallow. They re shallow for many miles, and as you push a large, amount of water towards the shoreline, because it's not deep there, you basically have no room to store that water. The water is going to climb higher as the surge approaches the coast, simply because it's just not deep enough to be able to accommodate all the water that's heading towards the coast.

I have been talking about this for 20 plus years, trying to alert people of what was coming, trying to advocate for climate action. Nothing-or very little, has been done. Let's say very little. Very little has been done to mitigate what's causing global warming, and therefore, here we are. So it's frustrating and it's scary to think that this is just one of what will be many, many more to come. And I think that combination of, you know, empathy, frustration and angst led to that moment.
