They were wild times. It's why it's called "cut" and "paste," btw, because that was exactly the process. Though it was usually wax adhesive or rubber cement, not actual paste.
Well, it's where you would take your strips of typeset text, as well as whatever line art or halftones photos, and lay them out on a page using a wax adhesive. Basically the thing that, oh, a desktop publishing (itself an old job I once had that's feels antiquated) achieves, but without computers.
