This may get me blocked, but … I don't get the passion for soft serve ice cream. But I have fond memories of the Berkey Creamery on the Penn State U campus in College Station, PA. They had an ice cream called Death by Chocolate, a name well deserved. And yet, I survived to tell the tale. Yummy!
That is pretty shocking indeed. I'm about the age of your mom, and I had no idea. But of course the Soviet Union was pretty much a closed book to us in the west. I have Timothy Snyder's book Bloodlands on my reading list. It covers the Holodomor, but I don't know how close to the present it gets.

Classic tsundoku. (Look it up!)

I can't wait (but I'll have to). Quite miffed by Amazon: I preordered the (kindle) book on August 16, then a few days ago they canceled my preorder. I had to preorder again, at nearly twice the price. I hope – but don't believe - that you'll receive a substantial part of the increase.
