Unlike everyone else Emet-Selch is the only one who uses nicknames (derogatorily) instead of calling him by name, to provoke. When in fact it's him simply using Caius' name that's more effective. There's only one time he slips up and uses an actual term of endearment but Caius doesn't understand it
So he pretty much only remembers the aftermath, the destruction and rebuilding. Like many others they lost their father that day. Everyone said it's a miracle they got out safely - but is it really when you are protected by Hydaelyn
He was out in the woods with his sister when it happened. The sight of red skies and fire raining down caused his echo to go out of control and triggered a very ancient fear in him, leaving him almost paralyzed and confused. They managed to escape to safety from the burning forest unharmed
For the first time there was a sense of freedom for him and a chance to get away from everything. He had never before traveled much outside of The Black Shroud and now, suddenly, there was a whole wide world open for him, so much to see and explore.
He went back home post-EW to try to recover, that's when Celia in turn took care of him as he always did for her in their childhood and they had all the time in the world to talk. He still tends to forget she's not a little kid anymore and is in fact quite capable, not needing anyone to guard her.
They've always had a close bond and are very protective of each other, but after the Calamity and their father's passing they became a bit more distant as both tried to recover on their own ways. Caius's travels and WoL business also keep him away a lot so he can't visit often.
Everything else came later with the story - his personality and lore, which I had no idea at first since this is my first (and only tbh) MMO and I just wanted to make a nice looking character. And here I now am obsessing over him (WoL disease is very real yall)
