The current AI industry is the new oil: they demand the right to extract resources, to pollute both the social space and the physical environment, and they claim there will be massive dividends for society so they should not be required to make safe or to pay.
I disagree about the whole oil thing because I don't see us driving our cars around powered by AI or whatever I agree that AI is shit, nobody wants it and yet people are trying to force it
100% and it's treating all human intellect and creativity as a reserve to be tapped. A friend who was working in AI wasn't keen on that particular analogy when I tried it out on them though.
I agree, and companies like Uber and Airbnb laid the ground for this disaster. As a society, we must push back on rampant corporate greed.
the dividends: environmental and cultural and social destruction
All fax, no printer. Exploitation is exploitation in the end, regardless of the means.
But unlike oil, AI is being branded in almost every product and the immediate reaction is a mix of Justifiable disgust and mockery. People abhor “AI” and the world as a whole is clocking onto how shit it is. It’s going to go the way of NFTs.
Oil is incredibly useful!
Oil AND snake oil!
Oil did deliver a higher standard of living over coal and whale oil etc. AI is even more extractive for zero benefit, probably negative to society
I don't know what to say about environmental stuff, but I like this approach to AI governance re building in structural parity to increase equity but also trust, engagement, and profitability...similar models are FDA, fair trade cert etc.youtu.be/fj3zsiLOgCE?feature=shared
