“Overhead, the two moons worked together to bathe the world in a strange light.” ― Haruki Murakami, 1Q84
The asteroid was discovered in August and is set to become a mini-moon, spinning around Earth in a horseshoe shape for about two months.
"These things can happen, Mr. Okada. As you know, we live in a violent and chaotic world. And within this world, there are places that are still more violent, still more chaotic. Do you understand what I mean, Mr. Okada?"
Some really great Murakami stuff here. I'm a huge fan. I've read Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World so many times I've lost count. Looking forward to the new translation. Also The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is a masterpiece imo.
Murakami Fest Week 3. This week we learn where Murakami was when he learned about Black Monday in 1987. Interestingly, because of his encyclopedic knowledge of Fitzgerald, we learn a bit about the crash in 1929 as well. howtojaponese.com/2024/09/15/b...
Murakami Fest Week 2. One of my favorite chapters in the book. Murakami is worn out after finishing Norwegian Wood but seems to be at a loose end with nothing to do in Kavala during the rainy October of 1987. howtojaponese.com/2024/09/08/i...
Murakami Fest 2024 begins with a look at the 1987 Athens Marathon, which Murakami ran, his second time on the course but first time running towards Athens. I'm continuing to blog through his 1990 travel memoir "Distant Drums." howtojaponese.com/2024/09/01/a...
