I think the running assumption is that, if Trump is defeated, the GOP will turn back to sane, reasonable conservatism. I have my doubts. Trump is less the disease than a symptom of an increasingly on-line, reality-free populism, the causes of which are more structural than personal

There is zero chance they turn into a reasonable center right party if Trump's upcoming coup fails. None. They haven't been sane since Eisenhower, if that.
