Whatever happens, do not cry in the conference room
I did my PhD studies in Europe, not the United States, so there wasn’t a set number of courses to go through and the program was a lot less structured than US grad school.
I was at a conference recently and was so moved by two talks (back to back, same session) that I cried during both and mentioned said crying to both authors in the Q and A.
Do you think this is specific to academia, or does it generalize to other professional settings? I think not showing emotions is expected of us in most professional situations, which is not to say it's a good thing! My ex was a high-powered executive, there was certainly no room for emotions for him
