Well here it is. My article about Twitter and why we should have a broader debate about social media and democracy. "When everyone is more concerned with what they stand for, as opposed to with what they know, meaningful conversation becomes impossible.“
The impact on my life was overwhelmingly positive. But the dark side of social media was a threat to democracy long before Elon Musk
It’s become a nightmare: the unscrupulous know they can spread nonsense so quickly that rebuttal is hard, if not impossible. But I’m still trying…🤦♂️ framingthequestion.blog/2023/11/30/t...
I bailed out of twitter last month. It was getting worse by the week. Too much hatred and ignorance there now. I'm sure I followed you there. I had to stop following some accounts I liked as I couldn't take the constant abuse they were getting.
Thank you for that. Excellent. What, if anything, do you think we could do to keep this platform an instrument of good? Paul Flaherty
Good to hear your experience, but too few of the people I follow have yet migrated here to enable Twitter to be ditched. I guess I’m not alone.
"On a weekly basis, someone would tell me .. that I was naive, arrogant, unimaginative, entitled, misguided, badly informed, a fool" This is the human condition, so we should be wary of dismissing it out of hand. I'm for embracing it, for 'muddling better'.
Nailed it. 👍
Great piece which all resonated with me (apart, of course, from the huge following). What happened to Twitter is a tragedy. I did not experience it too directly as I was in my own small corner of it. Hopefully eg bluesky will eventually replicate its best features. Thanks for the piece.
Well worth reading. Keep up the good work. Also the Guardian appears to be one of the few most reliable sources.
Using twitter, at least in the early days helped me report gas & water leaks, & probably prevent a number of nasty falls. Find interesting friends who I would never have met a journalist, a diplomat, a philosopher. Support and uphold many with a few words of kindness. 🧵
very realistic to what I've experienced recently
