When the Voting Rights Act became law, the DOJ sent letters to every county registrar in the South, informing them of their duties under the law and the consequences for breaking it. I’d like to see the DOJ send a note about these prosecutions to every election clerk in America. Put them on notice.

Trump: “People are getting no help from our federal government [after Helene]” FACT CHECK: This is a blatant lie. The Biden-Harris administration has provided swift support for the victims of Hurricane Helene, and Republican officials have praised the federal response. Meanwhile, Trump withheld

An NBC News headline: "New probe confirms Trump officials blocked Puerto Rico from receiving hurricane aid"

Your conspiracy theory of the day: Trump hosted Netanyahu at Mar-a-Lago a few weeks back. They have a shared interest in Trump winning. Talk today that Israel might strike Iran’s oil facilities. Crude is now trading 5% higher. An oil crisis on the eve of the election would be an October surprise.

I got a lot of shade for talking about fraud in the voluntary carbon markets over the last few years, as though I was unfairly conflating my criticisms with actual violations of law. Anyway here's the DOJ filing criminal charges against Ken Newcombe for wire, commodities, and securities fraud.

1. A fortnight ago, I wrote about the scandal of our Internal Drainage Boards, which are supposed to stop flooding, but are unaccountable, self-serving, feudal bodies that do more harm than good. Now a disturbing email has landed in my inbox. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre... 🧵

More floods are coming to Britain, but you ought to know this: the system that should protect us is a scandal | George Monbiot

A network of public bodies are supposed to safeguard us from flooding. But, like old boys’ clubs, they are bastions of self-interest, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

2. It was sent to the Internal Drainage Boards by Innes Thomson, head of the Association of Drainage Authorities, that supposedly oversees the IDBs. Here’s the text:

Dear Clerks & CEOs,

Some of you may have already seen an article published by the Guardian this morning, written by Mr George Monbiot, which is a full-on attack of IDBs and ADA.

I would welcome your thoughts on how you feel we should best deal with this.

Do we completely ignore which could annoy Monbiot the most ?

Do we wait and see if it generates any wider media interest ?

With best rgds,

Innes

3. I can understand why they don’t want to defend the indefensible, but it should be slightly concerning for those whose homes get flooded as a result of the IDBs’ inbuilt uselessness, that his communications policy seems to be guided by what could “annoy Monbiot the most”.

4. Frankly, I couldn’t give a tinker’s cuss whether they respond or not. This isn’t about me. This is about a stupendous waste of public money, damage to people’s homes, threats to their lives, and the vandalism of precious ecosystems such as chalk streams.

5. The fact that they treat it as some kind of game tells you all you need to know about these useless and pernicious old boys’ clubs.
