I'm staggered by these numbers. In Ireland we had 7,800 students taking Leaving Cert. German last year, for a population of 5 million. 2,000 A level students for a population of 67 million is tiny, and a big slice of that is probably students with family connections in German-speaking countries.
It’s very sad this has happened. I loved doing A Level German in the 90s. There were 2 separate classes at my 6th form then but today they don’t even teach it.
