IIRC the director cut ( not the ultimate ) is Mann's vision one and his favoured. That's what I read somewhere along the years. Funny enough similar to Black Hawk Down director cut, always hits me why the theatrical release removed so many scenes, especially the UN relief column segments.

It is a fantastic sequence and always caught me why it was cut as it gives context to the whole fort actually covering the sending out of the messengers. The camera focus on the courier run with the blurred backdrop close to camera from the rampart is delightful.

I must say two. The first half hour of Master & Commander at my favourite little theatre cinema, when the new sound system was just recently installed. The other, Last of the Mohicans, probably the best wide screen projection in recent times and photography that still remains unsurpassed.
