It's being plunged into hell, being stuck there, being tormented in ways that I've never been adequately able to describe. Learning about RSD was like the final step in figuring out that when the bad thoughts came, I "just" needed to strap in and ride it out, not make things worse by feeding them.
P.S., the quotation marks are being used ironically, not emphatically.
