I think they were hoping the 14th amendment or incarceration would legally eliminate Trump, and one of them would be there to swoop in to fill the vacuum.

I think this mostly because I'm in 100% agreement with you that their approach was incomprehensible if they thought Trump was staying in the race all the way to the end.
