the longer the book the better for that reason. Or series esp. EJ Howard's Cazalet Chronicles & Olivia Manning's Balkan & Levant Trilogies. & also Judith Kerr's 'Pink Rabbit' & its sequels re growing up in Britain. (Brilliant dramatisation on Sunday R4 drama some years ago).
