By the way, for newer editorial freelancers: I've never had a publisher send me an editing test without mentioning their rates first. Not once.
"They pay $2/hr but they REALLY value my work" is not a thing.
I've also learned that it's never a question of being treated well vs. being paid well. The people who treat you poorly will also waste your time, not respond to your invoices, offer exploitative rates, etc. It's actually all-good or all-bad, which makes things easy to judge.
I learned this when I started renting in my early 20s, and I learned it again in my first year of freelancing: There are many small people in the world who enjoy exploiting others. If a job posting makes no sense, then the person behind it doesn't respect you.
Just saw a job post from a small company looking to subcontract freelancers. No pay range mentioned, but the application form asked about 10 open-ended questions & required a sample edit (which, confusingly, came in PDF form, even though editors edit in Word). Run from stuff like this. #AmEditing
Is "app" in this case like "browser extension"? I think of apps as only being on my phone (am I outdated?). I use Trello/Toggle and also use a Zotero extension for certain academic copyedits.
