the most benevolent reading is that they think that anything that benefits richer people (developers, high income renters) must necessarily be bad for others. it’s zero-sum thinking and wrong.

the worse version is that they’re secure and don’t want to make sacrifices (ie changing buildings in their neighborhoods) to benefit others, and they lie either to themselves or others about what really motivates them.
