I think the point of this isn't so much to create convincing news footage so much as to cast doubt on actual news footage. It allows anyone to say "well that's probably fake." It degrades the information environment as a whole and I've always felt that is going to be AI's main impact

I think we're well past that point. I think tho that these kinds of fakes are currently contained in the online world. But at some point my friends who don't use computers and watch TV every evening like we all used to 30 years ago will start being exposed to these kinds of videos.

Honestly though... her lips aren't synced, the voice is immediately questionable because of the lack of inflection, and who is at a site like that, representing CNN, bra free in a skimpy dress showing off her tattoo? Also, much harder to make it specific to background, etc.

probably foolish but i tend to be optimistic in response to this. skepticism and being able to verify information are skills and are not compromised by this. like i think this only has legs because of the low-trust environment we find ourselves in. like the niche for this was already there.

It's going to be such a valuable tool in the authoritarian effort to spread propaganda, cultivate distrust, and erode informed consensus, yeah

I assumed the intent was to bring this back.

yeah that’s exactly it. it starts making you pick apart everything you see and knowing human minds we might start seeing flaws manufactured by our brains, AI “tells,” that aren’t even there because a clip is authentic

The background is the give away. It keeps resetting.

I suspect that a lot of the trash problems we're having would be reduced significantly if people all had to actually pay for the lifecycle their AI use, instead of it being subsidized by companies hoovering up VC money faster than the worst boondoggles of the 1990s.

This is what ALL the early releases, ( BIG DECIDERS), brought out into the POLITICAL ARENA ! They have introduced a FORM OF SOFTWARE FOR VIDEO, WHICH WILL NOW CAUSE HAVOC IN THIS NEXT PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION !
