Video statement from NSIDC’s Twila Moon at a pre-AGU workshop on polar geoengieering projects. These ideas have been recently publicized in a “Giant Antarctic Ocean Curtain to stop sea level rise” press article. Scientists [paraphrased]: “Whoa. Time out folks.” 🧪⚒️ www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLnQ...
At AGU I was hanging out with a couple of glaciologists who got invited to that "workshop" and we were literally laughing out loud at how embarrassingly bad the geoengineering ideas were. It's much less funny how seriously their non-expert supporters are pushing for them, though.
Personally -- as we launch into the AR7 cycle -- I'm a little disenchanted with just writing reports and watching the cryosphere dwindle. I'm at least open to a conversation about intervening to reduce ice loss. Of course, acknowledging many caveats mentioned in the video! 😕
What could go wrong? 🤣 We need another Ridley Scott film about geoengineered disaster. Didn't anyone invite him to bluesky?
Wait what about a bunch of refrigerators and really really long extension cords
