that last part seems random, but they were connected with all the mule people in the area, including a mule rescue.
I used to be part of a search and rescue team years ago. go to them. look around for where the horse barns are. they'll tell you who has mules and mule rescues and you can get them that way. (I also had a friend who had a horse kept at a large ranch.)
I had about a dozen mules that lived across the street from me and honestly, they are the best: you don't see it but mules are very good at self-preservation and always pick the safest routes (or refuse to go), they can pack a lot, and they are good-natured.
