We’ve come under heat in the past because our wages weren’t the highest ($45000 a year full time.) and the criticism came from people who didn’t understand that it’s not on the shoulders of a small non profit org to shoulder the larger issues of the lit industry, but funding for the arts in general.

Everyone who left resigned willingly. That’s what I’m partly sad about, I didn’t get a choice in the matter. If I had known even a month ahead I would have also applied for the new position they were hiring for. But deep down I know these issues stem beyond the management of the org itself.

I continue to be unemployed and my partner and I were down to $0 this past December. I still care about the folks at the organization, and wish them well, but personally I feel as if I’d been the scapegoat due to finances. Especially since no one else had been fired before in the org’s history.

I was also paid for an additional few months to get on my feet again, but due to the impacts of my illness and my being on disability, finding another hybrid part-time sitting down job was near impossible. When I tried work that involved physical labour, I fainted a few weeks in.

Afterwards, I expected to go back to work. My bosses delayed my back to work meeting, and when it finally happened, I was told my position had been dissolved. I no longer had work there. I said I wouldn’t make a fuss about it, as it’s a women BIPOC run organization and they are doing important work.

Around the time of my diagnosis, there was a new position open in the org, and they did a hiring for it. Shortly afterwards, I was asked to go on medical leave for a month, paid. I was told to rest. Tbh I did really need it. My body was so weak.
