The obvious answer is because they are squicked out by the existence of trans people and desperately want them back in the closet.
When someone is doing something that is obviously bad politics after it has been demonstrated to be very bad politics you probably should come down on the "huh they really want this" side.
Nah. They want gays back in the closet. They want trans people up in the attic.
