The cynicism that permeates across this culture is an impediment on multiple levels. It stymies collective action, it leaves a population that constantly says it is 'not surprised' by the vilest things, it turns people into consumers rather than agents, and it ultimately leaves society worse off.

This is HUGE! We once saw Old Faithful from the back country and nearly panicked (because you get a little disoriented while hiking tree-covered cliffs) and it wa a "very active year" . That explosion would've been terrifying to witness close up!
