reading this jennifer burns profile of milton friedman and the entire section on the civil rights act is infuriating. friedman comes across as smug, blinkered and willfully ignorant of the actual state of the jim crowd south, to say nothing of its history. here, he is speaking out against the act

Goldwater, and Friedman alongside him, viewed the proposed law with suspicion. It would have been relatively easy for Friedman to avoid commenting on the topic. Instead, as the campaign progressed, Friedman became increasingly vocal. In an appearance before Harvard students, Friedman launched into a long diatribe against the Civil Rights Act. "The majority in this country are prejudiced and it is naĆÆve ā€”no, it's undemocratic,ā€” to suppose you're going to get people to vote against themselves," he argued. In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, he veered off topic to explain and defend Goldwater's position.
"Sen. Goldwater believes improvement in the lot of the Negro depends primarily on freedom of economic opportunity and on changing att-tudes on the part of individuals," he explained, presenting Goldwateris views as equivalent to his. "He believes that laws by the federal government cannot effectively improve the Negro's positionā€¦ā€

I didnā€™t know about Friedmanā€™s connection with Goldwater but it totally checks out. He got better at not saying the quiet parts out loud as he ascended to icon status with Regan and the neocons. And yeah. This is totally rant-worthy.

libertarians have always been this way, but oh the affront they take if you call it out

It's fun to watch new generations discover that Uncle Milty sucked. No snark intended. It's understandable that some reputations that were well known by previous generations would need to be rediscovered by later ones.

Libertarians and Friedman fans are quick to yammer about tyranny of the majority when it comes to policies that affect them, but when it came to civil rights in the 60s it was "majority" rule.

Friedman sucks. Heā€™s been proven wrong again and again. Trickle down economics doesnā€™t work and only benefits the wealthy. Heā€™s ignorant.

Heā€™s horrible. Even worse, heā€™s getting credit for getting the U.S. out of the 2007-2008 financial crisis. Obama used a Keynesian approach. He used government spending to get the economy back on track.
