i have not seen any mention of it but it sure seems like the authorities cracking down on student protesters are basically attempting to do what they wish they would have done in response to the george floyd protests

Maybe even more, what they wish they had done in response to the apartheid protests, which were more on campus. Most of the BLM protests were in the summer, off-campus, and when students were off-campus in any case.

This *is* what they did for the George Floyd protests out in Seattle and Portland at least

The violence was so much worse during 2020, the cops were literally ramming crowds with vehicles. People were killed in vigilante violence aided and abetted by police. I'm not following the logic here

"Defund the Police"

Didn't they, though? There were a ton of mass arrests and beatings during the Floyd protests.

I accidentally went out to my car in Mpls one night when they set the George Floyd curfew one hour earlier, I didn't realize, and I came out to National Guard with guns drawn.

That is pretty bleak, in Minneapolis cops had so much tear gas going we couldn't open the windows, people were getting hit by less-lethal rounds for sitting on their own porches. People lost eyes, etc.
