I can understand why the NYT is concerned, because Joe Fucking Biden just destroyed their narrative that he's an addled old man, then he pivoted and laid bare the unseriousness of the GOP and put SCOTUS on notice that when he's re-elected they're going to be screwed.
A more accurate version of that sentence is “He gave a good speech by SOTU standards, but this reporter still thinks he’s old.”
No matter what he'd done, the NYT would say he hadn't quelled concerns about his competency b/c they are going to keep publishing articles about how old he is.
