Furthermore, the power requirements for AI are similar to those of a CPU, with 10 TOPS resulting in 1W on a 4 nm architecture.
This happens because the 300 TOPS GPU dedicates most of its die space to that rating but doesn't have enough memory bandwidth to support it, while the 150 TOPS GPU has plenty of bandwidth to maximize its capabilities.
Regarding AI, theoretical performance isn't the only factor at play; bandwidth plays a crucial role. You could have one AI GPU rated at 300 TOPS and another at 150 TOPS, and both would perform similarly.
This practice threatens not only competition but also jeopardizes the principles of open-source software and the free exchange of ideas. Tim Sweeney was always right; we need new laws.
