Relationship killer: A guy I was dating said an offensive joke and started to explain the joke to me when I didn’t laugh. I responded, “Oh, I understood it; I just didn’t think it was funny.” For some reason he never spoke to me again.

I've been told the best response is to say "I'm sorry to be dumb but I don't get why that's funny - could you explain it to me?" and if they say forget it, follow up with an earnest "really, I'd like to know" - showing that it was just obnoxious not humorous
