Sidewalks used to be wider. It’s a fact that rarely gets acknowledged in discussions about road diets. Usually the road diet debate is framed as taking space AWAY from cars. Really it’s about giving it BACK to pedestrians. Here’s a good article about it tinyurl.com/2s4bzxw3

I live in Chicago, and they just repaved Catalpa--and narrowed the street! They made the sidewalks/hellstrips huge. I wish they'd used some of that for proper bike lanes, but it's gone from 4 lanes to 2.

Not just the sidewalk! The stairs, the light wells. Roads are crushing the buildings themselves.

God help the cyclists in that discussion. I had to give up. Every time I get on a bike someone tried to run over me.
