"Trump isn't finished." nytimes.com/2024/08/21/o... This is a breakout column by Tom Edsall. His expert sources — political scientists — are united in their call of alarm. There is no phony "both sides do it." And the political press is not spared. Sean Wilentz calls theirs "a staggering failure."

thank you very much for the share link. The other NYT columnists should read & learn.

It's so inexplicably jarring to have this Edsel column side-by-side with the Political Desk's nitpicking "fact checks" and laundering of Trump's speeches.

The Timothy Snyder quote that is absolutely correct on all points.

It is very clear that a second Trump term would be disastrous, so I am not really helped by explanations of how this would be so. What I have been looking for, is a clear laying out of the ways that he could claim the Presidency in the face of an electoral defeat on November 5th.

I won't read this column because I got plenty of sleep last night, and don't need more, but Edsall is very much a Part of The Problem. He doesn't get nearly enough of the blame, perhaps because not enough people read him. But he's a sleeper hack. Literally.

Notice how similar Trump's situation is to Netanyahu's. A major difference is that Netanyahu is murdering tens of thousands and hoping to expand wars to keep from judgment of his actions. All with massive aid from the US without honest examination of circumstances. A full on boycott of reality.Notice how similar Trump's situation is to Netanyahu's. This and his whole "we don't need more votes" thing keeps me up at night! We KNOW he'll try and steal the election.

In terms of money, Trump today is a very different candidate. The corporate qualms that surfaced in the wake of the Jan. 6 insurrection have been subordinated to the prospect of billions in tax breaks for business and the rich if Trump returns to office.

According to OpenSecrets, of the $472.8 million Trump and allied PACs have raised through the middle of this year, a quarter, $115.4 million, has come from the securities and investment industry, the financial core of the Republican establishment. In 2016, this industry effectively shunned Trump, giving him a paltry $20.8 million.
