..and I should correct myself in saying fiction/art and didn't mean to imply 'just art' is something less. Art is too all encompassing a concept and influential! But its early and I'm only on coffee number one.

best fiction is social criticism and influences society. It has something to say about the world. It influences ideas. If authors intend to influence others with their ideas - then shouldn't they be open to understanding the impact through those discussions?

I find it all a bit weird. The advent of social media means we engage with fiction authors more than in the past... an extension of bookclub, but the author isn't absent. What's the point of SM then? Just an echo chamber of affirmation? Never say anything negative bc the author might see it?

I think there is also an element where because it was all so sudden and unplanned, bright ideas and fresh takes get an opportunity to shine rather than being beaten down by process.
