So we need to know how this conversation has been going in order to step in ourselves. The most important part of secondary research is built out of the bibliographies of works we're already looking at, scholarship we've heard presented, and so on, not just generating a list out of thin air.

When finding historical scholarship (and I assume the same is true in many other fields), the point isn't to find isolated sources; the point is to find sources that are aware of each other, that have actively discussed or debated a certain topic in such a way that our understanding has developed.

I've just put my finger on another, hugely important reason why LLMs cannot substitute for research beyond mere accuracy. It's the same reason why academics don't just do manual queries of source databases, and often won't even start there unless they're totally unfamiliar with a given topic...

(This one sounds very obvious but there are way more conventions to think of than you might expect! And your editor may try to argue with you later, so having the ground rules and their rationale prepared is handy.)

Also, you will probably have to change some conventions as you go, but making as many decisions about the rules you're going to follow in editing, and making sure you stick to them, will avoid irritation down the road.

Depends on the kind of text, but for documentary (or, god helps us, financial) sources, having a really good think about the eventual layout from the get-go is often very important, especially considering the difference in sizes between Word pages and most books.

(I will say that researching the environmental side of LLMs has made me more conscious in general about how my digital choices use energy!)

Today I went to find a missing reference for a fact I'd written down ages ago... and actually found it within mere minutes! 🤯 It's an academic miracle!

Alt: Mushu's silhouette appears framed in fire, with caption 'Did I hear someone ask for a miracle?!'
