I have been on the internet since 1992 and covering video games "professionally" since 1994. Did some radio, a tiny bit of TV, started podcasting in 2005 and never really stopped. patreon.com/jeffgerstmann

People need to stop calling every single game that adds content over time and has online play a “live service game.” Fucking get it together, people.

For me, my rule of thumb is it needs that stuff and also "Does it have seasonal battle passes/events" (Though I admit even that isn't perfect. And publishers have muddied the water over the years, which hasn't helped)

Stardew Valley, the live service game

There are so many devs who have long term plans for games that want to get away from the "live service" stigma, but also want to communicate to their audience they will have more content over time. As a consultant I'm constantly kicking around new terms and hoping to find something more effective
