The former president’s problem in the 2024 election is that he can no longer run as if he is a man alone.
I REALLY want someone to ask him how long it takes to "MAGA", since it started with freaking REAGAN.
I think his point is that while many Americans were on board with the 2016 theme of saying fuck you to mainstream politicians, they are less on board with full destruction of the Federal government but the 2016 message no longer works when you’re a former president.
The "MAGA has gotten out of control" notion is bullshit. It presumes Trump had a "plan." Trump is simply a bundle of narcissistic rage; a howling black hole of insecurity that can only be satisfied with escalating praise and lies. There was—and is—no plan. It's all provocation and reaction.
I think Ezra has a point. If you look at Trump’s most recent rallies and also recent polling, it shows rather clearly that the faustian bargain Trump made with the 2025 people is costing him because IMO a) Trump doesn’t believe in 2025 and b) MAGA wants much more extreme stuff than Trump is giving
