This week's comic: Prairie Progressives

Prairie Progressives

1. The popularity of Tim Walz has reporters flummoxed

Tim Walz holding a piglet flanked by supporters

Reporter: What -- are we expected to cover these people as "real" Americans?

2. Reporter in diner interviewing guy in a Harris-Walz t-shirt: You're from a small midwestern town... and you're pro-choice and pro-union?

Diner guy: You've been hanging out in the wrong diners, buddy.

3. Reporter in field interviewing woman: But--but--rural folks aren't progressive!

Woman: Have you studied the history of farmers' and labor movements at all, my dude?

4. Reporter holding up MAGA hat to bearded guy: Come on -- don't you like MAGA just a teeny bit? Put on this hat and say something adorably rude.

Guy: When do I get my valorizing puff piece?

Reporter: Not until you put on the hat.

People are always surprised when I tell them Wisconsin is where the Progressive party was born, and Milwaukee was run by Socialists until 1960.

THIS IS SO TRUE & HORRIBLY HILARIOUS 😂 I mean, farmers are often the first to beta-test apps and new equipment! Engineers love farmers, and plenty of them have tech in their background. Farmers were never the hokey pastoral paintings...

welp, nothing for it, gonna just have to talk to twelve county-level republican operatives and then conspicuously fail to mention that in my piece

Speaking as someone born in Nebraska and raised (well, mostly) in Missouri, THANK YOU.

In Minnesota it's the Democratic Farmer Labor party, DFL for short.

A pin on button with a simple drawing of a loon with a laser eye and a North Star behind it. It says "Minnesota" above the loon and the body of the loon says "DFL".

Thank you! I grew up in the Midwest and have been shocked by the pretentious "East Coast" silverspoon in mouth reporters... They've been treating everyone like they're in a foreign country and like they've never been west of Pennsylvania.

Love this! Sharing it with my red state rural county Democratic party. They'll get a kick out of it. One irony about this: in my corner of this red state, local papers do sometimes write puff pieces about local progressives. NYT ignores them but the local pages give their support.
