Hot Warhammer take: I think even the starter set "easy build" kits are way too complex and full of abstract shapes and wierd pieces for new hobbyists. As much as the models can be dynamic, I think it would be much more accessible and appealing to offer simpler beginner kits again.
It’s kinda crazy how they seem to equate “push fit” with “easy to build” because, as you say, that sprue is a nightmare for a first timer. And it’s not even about maximising space because the Frost/Stargrave sprues clear that hurdle fine.
I have fond fond memories of my £10 1994 Citadel Colour Paint Set with a very basic Space Marine and Chaos Warrior. Coverage of some of those paints was SHOCKING, though 😂 A good intro, nice big shapes.
This box had ZERO instructions in it and it was still pretty easy to figure out what to do There’s no way I could do that with today’s stuff. Not even a simple things like Chaos Cultists
I actually saw a vid yesterday from someone very excited about getting into the hobby and it was about building their first model. One of the easy build ones from the starter kit and they STRUGGLED. They either need to organize sprues better(I have bad eyes and struggle) or have more freeform minis
As someone who converts all their models I miss the days off "legs, torso, two arms and a head." Sure I have a bunch of weird/static looking models. But I soon learnt how to make them look good
I agree. One of the complaints I have heard from people who are getting into it, and who have built other model kits, say that the random number layout is not helpful.
Even I struggle, and I've got really good spatial awareness.
Yessss - I always end up clipping off all the easy build pegs anyway! 🤣 And having to find the perfect angle for it to finally line up 😵💫
very much agreed. a starter set isnt just a starter for the game rules wise, it should be a starter for the hobby too.
How many pointing primaris lieutenants do we need, anyway?
